Did You Think To Pray?

Did you think to pray?  About 35 years ago… I was on my knees next to the open door of the fridge… cleaning up a spill and muttering a few words that should have been kept to myself.   I happened to look at the open door to my left and found a card tucked between the mayo and the mustard that said… “Did You Think To Pray?”

I was so astonished!  What?  Who put that there?  And… how appropriate.  There I was on my knees…. cussing up a storm and someone was reminding me to pray.  But, no one would fess up to putting the card in the door of the fridge.

Several weeks later… I was looking through my recipe box when another “Did You Think To Pray?” card appeared.  What?  Who put that there?

Over several weeks, I found cards tuck here and there… under the towels… in drawers and under magazines.  What?  Who put them there?

After several weeks… my son Brad… who was about 7 or 8 at the time…fessed up.  His teacher in church had her students print out several “Did You Think To Pray?” cards to take home and hide around the house.   Quiet as a mouse… he had done so.

What a sweet gentle reminder it was for me… to say my prayers.

The years have flown by and the cards are long gone now… except for the ones in my recipe box… where several cards are still hidden among the breads, cakes and cookies, etc.  I love to go skimming along through the file and run across that sweet gentle reminder… in Brad’s handwriting…”Did You Think To Pray?”   It always takes me by surprise… and I love it.

This is the season of gratitude, compassion, benevolence and cooking.  Being reminded of that when baking Christmas goodies… is a good thing!

P.S.  That young boy just turned 40 on November 30.  How time flies.

P.P.S.  By the way… did you notice that gruesome recipe box?  My beautiful hand painted recipe box went the way of the garbage when it was completely destroyed in a kitchen fire.  (Don’t leave bacon cooking… and walk outside to talk to your neighbor).  Luckley… the cards inside were saved… some charred on the edges and others discolored… but saved.  Yea!  A new recipe box will be purchased, when I find a beautiful one.  In the meantime… this will do.

  1. Oh, yes. I used to have a prayer on my refrigerator about that. I do not know the author, but here it is

I knelt to pray but not for long,
I had too much to do.
I had to hurry and get to work
For bills would soon be due.
So I knelt and said a hurried prayer,
And jumped up off my knees.
My Christian duty was now done
My soul could rest at ease.
All day long I had no time
To spread a word of cheer.
No time to speak of Christ to friends,
They’d laugh at me I’d fear.
No time, no time, too much to do,
    That was my constant cry,
No time to give to souls in need
But at last the time, the time to die.
    I went before the Lord,
I came, I stood with downcast eyes.
For in his hands God held a book,
It was the book of life.
God looked into his book and said
    “Your name I cannot find,
I once was going to write it down…
    But never found the time.”
